Une femme est retrouvée pendue chez elle. Tout accuse HAROLD TAYLOR qui se trouvait sur les lieux. Miss JANE MARPLE fait partie du jury lors de son procès. Elle est la seule membre à clamer son innocence, l'accusé lui-même plaidant non coupable. La détective décide d'enquêter avec l'aide de son grand ami JIM STRINGER. Elle commence à voir la sœur de la victime qui cache un secret. Puis, elle suit la troupe de théâtre avec laquelle elle travaillait.
