La joueuse de piano KAY KERRIGAN apprend que sa sœur vient de mourir. Elle se serait suicidée mais KAY pense que son amoureux, THOMAS BRUHME II, est fautif. Elle lui rend visite et le tient en joue avec le revolver à blanc qu'elle lui a subtilisé mais un coup mortel le touche. Elle s'enfuit et devient la suspecte numéro 1 pour la police. Elle se cache à Honolulu, change de nom et se teint les cheveux en brun. C'est alors que le détective séducteur SAM WYE entre en jeu.
