LUCAS MARSH poursuit des études en médecine dans un hôpital afin de devenir chirurgien. Le peu d'argent qu'il possède est dilapidé par son alcoolique de père. Son avenir est ainsi compromis mais il trouve un stratagème : il se marie avec l'infirmière KRISTINA HEDVIGSON qui lui donnera l'argent nécessaire à sa réussite. Après l'obtention du diplôme, MARSH est envoyé à Greenville où il seconde le Docteur RUNKLEMAN, proche de la retraite.
